The College of William and Mary was founded in the Williamsburg area in 1693. Williamsburg was established in 1699 as the Virginia Colony's second capital. The city was named Williamsburg after King William III of England. Williamsburg rapidly became a center of politics and learning. The capital city was moved to Richmond in 1780. Williamsburg then established itself as a county seat and a college town. Many Williamsburg buildings from the 18th century were still standing at the beginning of the 20th century. The city's restoration and reconstruction began in the late 1920's under the leadership of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. He provided funding for the project. Colonial Williamsburg is famous throughout the world as a place where the early history of the United States comes to life. Waller Mill Park has a 286-acre reservoir where visitors can go fishing and boating. Athletic people will enjoy the softball fields and tennis courts at Quarterpath Park. The Quarterpath Recreation Center at the park has a gym, an aerobics room and a large multipurpose room. Classes and athletic programs are held here. The Quarterpath Park Pool is open during the summer.
